From the graydapple.org website:
Name:
Sad Angel
Just when it couldn't get any worse for this poor
Arabian-cross mare, all hope of her rescue was shattered.
Sad Angel was special because a tear was rolling down her face when we first saw her ... she was bitten to shreds by other frightened kill pen horses. She had about a hundred bites on her skin and blood was trickling down her side, as documented in one of the photos.
This particular killer buyer only works with one rescue at New Holland. Unfortunately, the rescuer who works with him did not accommodate Angel's rescue. Angel was originally chosen along with a team of driving horses, and 2 offtrack thoroughbreds by Amanda to be saved. "They just came up to me and said in their own way, "Get me out of here," explains Amanda.
Amanda took their photos and posted them on Facebook. A community of horse lovers rallied together to help save all 5 horses ... but tragically, the rescuer botched up the deal, telling the killer buyer not to trust us and that we were "activists" who would ultimately expose him. Hence, despite almost $2000,00 raised on Facebook for their bail, and $2500.00 cash fronted by Gray Dapple's exec board member, Howard Brodsky, the 4 other horses were sent to Canada to meet the end of their short lives at the gates of a slaughterhouse. Ultimately, the rescuer caved in and released Sad Angel to Howard Brodsky, after he notified her in writing that a lawsuit would commence if she indeed signed these horses' death warrants. To protect Sad Angel, and due to numerous threats by the rescuer, we had to keep news of her survival a secret until now. Sad Angel's bites are now gone. She has gained a substantial amount of weight. She loves grazing in the pasture next to Stargazer. Sad Angel is an excellent children's riding horse. She is calm and willing and gentle with children of all ages -- and to boot, she is a comfortable ride. Sad Angel would do best with someone who wants to ride her for pleasure only. She has knowledge of dressage, English and Western riding. It is possible that she is a retired lesson horse. After a nightmarish couple of weeks in the kill pen, Sad Angel deserves the happy home of a lifetime. Angel will follow you around in her pasture if you come to visit her. She has excellent stall manners and loves to be brushed. She cried for the last time in her kill pen but miraculously made it out. Gray Dapple wanted to thank the facebook crowd for routing for Sad Angel. We apologize that we could not announce her safety until now.
